Link to TMDL GIS Shapefiles

The Sharebase site which previously housed dozens of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) GIS shapefiles in zip files has been removed. Instead, a geodatabase of TMDL subwatersheds with MS4 wasteload allocations has been assembled. The new geodatabase is available for download from the MnGeo Commons: TMDL Wasteload Allocation Areas for MS4s - Resources - Minnesota Geospatial Commons.

If you previously used the individual zipped files, be aware that some TMDL subwatersheds may have changed. An effort was made to review each shapefile against information in the TMDL report, to ensure that this geodatabase reflects the most accurate information for a TMDL subwatershed. There are 495 waterbody-pollutant combinations currently included in the geodatabase. This will be updated as TMDL projects with MS4 wasteload allocations are approved by the US EPA.

Data included in this dataset:

  • Geographic area associated with each waterbody-pollutant combination; referred to as a TMDL subwatershed.
  • TMDL project name as defined by MPCA's Tempo database. This is different than the title on the cover page of the report.
  • Direct link to the TMDL report for each TMDL subwatershed
  • EPA approval date
  • Baseline year for BMP reporting
  • Waterbody as named in the TMDL report (this may have subsequently changed due to MPCA assessment processes).
    • One waterbody may have multiple TMDL subwatersheds associated with it, depending on the number of pollutants with completed TMDLs.
  • Pollutant addressed by the TMDL

If you don't have GIS capability:

The MS4 Stormwater Mapping Tool is currently being updated to be able to display this dataset. Once the update is complete, you will be able to click on a point and it will identify the overlapping polygons that signify wasteload allocation areas for any TMDLs that are associated with that point.

The following TMDL project WLA areas are known to be missing or incomplete:

  • Crystal, Keller, and Lee Lakes Nutrient Impairment TMDL
    • Missing TMDL subwatersheds for Keller (19-0025-00) & Lee (19-0029-00) lakes

Crystal, Keller, and Lee Lakes Nutrient Impairment TMDL report

  • Lower Minnesota River WRAPS 2014
    • Missing TMDL subwatersheds for:
      • Riley Creek (07020012-511) for Escherichia coli and Total Suspended Solids (TSS)
      • Nine Mile Creek (07020012-809) for Escherichia coli
      • Purgatory Creek (07020012-828) for Escherichia coli
      • Hazeltine lake (10-0014-00)
      • Gaystock lake (10-0031-00)
      • Pike lake (70-0076-00)

Lower Minnesota River WRAPS 2014 Part II report

Lower Minnesota River WRAPS 2014 Part III report

  • Lower Mississippi River Basin-Fecal Coliform TMDL- files missing for all waterbodies

  • Mississippi River - La Crescent WRAPS 2015
    • Missing TMDL subwatersheds for Pine Creek (07040006-576) for Escherichia coli and Total Suspended Solids (TSS)

  • MN River E. Coli TMDL -files missing for all waterbodies

Cross reference list

The purpose of this form is to help determine which BMP type to use from the dropdown list in Column E of the BMP-activities completed tab in the TMDL form.

BMP pollutant reductions

The purpose of this worksheet is to provide a guideline for which BMPs may reduce which types of pollutants. Actual pollutant reductions may vary. MPCA will update this worksheet as additional information becomes available.
