Abstract: The Minnesota Construction Stormwater Permit requires pretreatment for filtration and infiltration practices. Forebays or other pretreatment practices are highly recommended for constructed stormwater ponds. The permit, however, does not specify the type of or sizing for pretreatment practices. We are discovering that many stormwater best management practices (bmps, also often called stormwater control measures or scms) are not performing as designed, often due to heavy sediment loads to the bmp and to poor design.

In this webinar, speakers will discuss solids in stormwater runoff and the role of pretreatment, some preferred approaches to implementing pretreatment practices, and some observations of pretreatment implementation. We’ll also briefly go through pretreatment information in the Minnesota Stormwater Manual.

January 19 webinar: Pretreatment - how can we do better?

Title. Pretreatment: how can we do better? When. January 19, 1:00-2:30 PM Central Standard Time Speakers

  • Dr. John Chapman, University of Minnesota - discussion of pretreatment and solids
  • Mike Isensee, Adminstrator of Carnelian Marine St. Croix Watershed District, and Noah Czech, Stormwater Compliance Specialist - pretreatment practices and approaches in the field
  • Chris French, National Regulatory Manager for BioClean - Observations (the good, bad, and ugly)

MPCA Simple Estimator Training Level 1

  • Goal: Participants will learn how to use the Estimator to estimate pollutant loading with and without best management practices.
  • Prerequisite
  • Format: Participants work on problems using the Estimator. Hands-on interactive format. Participants report out after working on problems. Class size limited.
  • Learning goals
    • Calculating pollutant loads with and without best management practices
    • Interpreting results and assessing your modeled system
  • Relevant link(s)

MIDS Calculator - Introduction

  • Goal: Participants will learn how to use the Minimal Impact Design Standards (MIDS) Calculator to estimate runoff volume reduction and pollutant loading with and without best management practices.
  • Prerequisite
  • Format: Participants work on problems using the MIDS Calculator. Hands-on interactive format. Participants report out after working on problems. Class size limited.
  • Learning goals
    • Create files in the MIDS Calculator
    • Set up a site
    • Learn how to incorporate best management practices into your site(s)
    • Basic components and functionality of the Calculator
  • Relevant link(s)

MIDS Calculator - Intermediate

  • Goal: Participants will work on more advanced problems using the Minimal Impact Design Standards (MIDS) Calculator
  • Prerequisite
    • Have the MIDS Calculator downloaded on your computer link to download
    • Have taken the Introduction course or be familiar with the learning goals described above for the Introductory training
  • Format: Participants work on problems using the MIDS Calculator. Hands-on interactive format. Participants report out after working on problems. Class size limited.
  • Learning goals
    • Become familiar with individuals bmps
    • Model a site with multiple bmps
    • Model sites where specific performance goals are difficult to meet
    • Learn ways to incorporate non-standard practices (e.g. street sweeping) or site characteristics (variable emcs) into the calculator

MIDS Calculator updates - Version 4

The Minimal Impact Design Standards (MIDS) Calculator has been updated to Version 4. This one hour webinar will provide a summary of the changes from Version 3 of the calculator.
