Schematic showing pollutant load reductions for infiltrated and filtration in Bioretention basin (with an underdrain)
Example schematic showing how pollutant load reductions are calculated for a bioretention basin with an underdrain. In this case, total volume, TSS and phosphorus credits are 100 percent for infiltrated water, while credits for filtered water (water captured by the underdrain) are 60 percent for TSS and are dependent on the media for phosphorus.

Pollutant removal, also called pollutant removal credit, refers to the pollutant reduction achieved toward meeting a runoff water quality goal. An example of a water quality goal is meeting TMDL pollutant reduction requirements. Pollutant removal credits can be achieved either by an individual BMP or cumulatively with multiple BMPs.

This page (Category) provides links to pages that provide information on pollutant removal for different stormwater practices. For information on specific pollutants go to the Level 1 Category called Pollutants, which contains links to information on specific pollutants and on management strategies and practices for pollutants.

For information on pollutant removal for individual stormwater best management practices, see the Level 3 Category Pollutant removal and credits.
