If water moving downward through an infiltration practice encounters a water table, water may mound under the infiltration practice. This occurs because the rate at which water moves downward through the infiltration practice is faster than the rate that water moves horizontally away from the practice. The maximum height of the mound, assuming no water moved horizontally away from the infiltration practice, is the depth of water that infiltrated divided by the porosity of the soil.
