Green infrastructure for Minnesota communities

MPCA, along with their contractors at LimnoTech and a diverse advisory team, drafted a booklet on green infrastructure for Minnesota communities. This booklet introduces green infrastructure principles, practices, and benefits by highlighting green infrastructure projects in and near Minnesota. We hope to inspire residents, communities, local governments, business leaders, and others to integrate more green infrastructure into their yards, commercial spaces, and public projects.

As of early October, 2025, MPCA graphic design, communications, and stormwater staff are completing edits to enhance accessibility, readability, and content. The booklet should be released later this fall. The format of the booklet is a pdf. Versions will be created for both online viewing and professional printing, so that the booklet may be made available offline as an outreach material. We plan to publish the booklet on this Manual webpage, along with a list of relevant links in and outside of the Manual.

A couple sneak peaks of booklet pages are included below. Note that these are draft and still being worked on by MPCA staff.

Here is a sneak peak of some of the native vegetation projects highlighted in the green infrastructure booklet. Projects are happening at businesses, organizations, and homes across Minnesota.

Here is a sneak peak of one of the bioretention practices highlighted in the green infrastructure booklet, rain gardens. The booklet provides an overview of each practice and one or more project highlights from our advisory team. You will see many great projects that are being done across Minnesota.
