Additional resources for completing the TMDL form

Link to TMDL GIS Shapefiles

The Sharebase site which previously housed dozens of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) GIS shapefiles in zip files has been removed. Instead, a geodatabase of TMDL subwatersheds with MS4 wasteload allocations has been assembled. The new geodatabase is available for download from the MnGeo Commons: TMDL Wasteload Allocation Areas for MS4s - Resources - Minnesota Geospatial Commons.

If you previously used the individual zipped files, be aware that some TMDL subwatersheds may have changed. An effort was made to review each shapefile against information in the TMDL report, to ensure that this geodatabase reflects the most accurate information for a TMDL subwatershed. There are over 500 waterbody-pollutant combinations currently included in the geodatabase. This will be updated as TMDL projects with MS4 wasteload allocations are approved by the US EPA.

Data included in this dataset

  • Geographic area associated with each waterbody-pollutant combination; referred to as a TMDL subwatershed.
  • TMDL project name as defined by MPCA's Tempo database. This is different than the title on the cover page of the report.
  • Direct link to the TMDL report for each TMDL subwatershed
  • EPA approval date
  • Baseline year for BMP reporting
  • Waterbody as named in the TMDL report (this may have subsequently changed due to MPCA assessment processes).
    • One waterbody may have multiple TMDL subwatersheds associated with it, depending on the number of pollutants with completed TMDLs.
  • Pollutant addressed by the TMDL

If you don't have GIS capability

The new Minnesota GeoSpatial Commons allows users to visualize the data in an online map.  You can use the available tools to filter the shapefile, so you're only looking at the projects or waterbodies you are interested in, and not all 500+. Otherwise, the MS4 Stormwater Mapping Tool also displays this dataset. You can click on a point in the map, and it will identify the overlapping polygons that signify wasteload allocation areas for any TMDLs that are associated with that point. In order to  see the wasteload allocation areas in the MS4 Stormwater Mapping Tool, turn on the 'TMDL Wasteload Allocation Areas' layer, which is listed under the 'MS4 requirements - other' group.

Warning: The rest of this page contains resources that may be helpful in completing the Annual TMDL Reporting. Please note that these resources may be out of date.  MPCA will update these lists in coordination with the roll out of the new annual reporting e-service.

Cross reference list

The purpose of this form is to help determine which BMP type to use from the dropdown list in Column E of the BMP-activities completed tab in the TMDL form.

BMP pollutant reductions

The purpose of this worksheet is to provide a guideline for which BMPs may reduce which types of pollutants. Actual pollutant reductions may vary. MPCA will update this worksheet as additional information becomes available.
